General Motors' mid-size pickup trucks - the Chevrolet Colorado and its counterpart, the GMC Canyon are introduced in 2004 to replace the GMC Sonoma and Chevrolet S-10. In late 2005 Isuzu began selling its own version, named the "i-Series". Also Isuzu participated in the design of the truck. The Chevrolet Colorado was jointly designed by GM's Brazil operations, GM's North American operations, and Isuzu, based on the GMT355. The vehicles are manufactured and produced at a GM plant in Shreveport, Louisiana and in. Rayong, Thailand.

However, in 2006, Coloardo/Canyon's sales lagged their Toyota competitor's by almost 34% and still leading the Ford pickup by 27.5%.
The Colorato LT crew cabs are the only trims of the Colrado to have 6-passenger seating, however crew cabs being limited to LT trims which most other Chevrolet vehicles only offer front bucket seating with the trim.
The Colarado and Canyon are expected to be completely redesigned and reengineered for the 2011 or 2012 model year. The aged Atlas 2.9 I4 and 3.7 I5 models will be replaced by the direct-injected base engines found in the new Equinox and Traverse (2.4 L LAF I4 and 3.6 L LLT V6), which are expected to come with the promise of better fuel economy. The new engines for Olorado are rated at 281 hp (210 kW) and 182 hp (136 kW). Six-speed transmission may also be viable with all three engines in the near future, and the 5.3 Vortec V8 is still expected to be an option and a promising even better fuel economy. Coloado will be built on the new GMT-700 platform, possibly being developed on a global platform in Brazil or Thailand.
